Letter from the Director: A Heart for God

A message from HCBC director Jon Oldham:

For the last couple of months, I have been meditating on the Psalms. Throughout my life, I have been impressed with David’s heart for God. David is an example of a real person, someone who made bad decisions, yet always returned to seek God’s face. When sin interrupted their relationship, David quickly leaned in and sought forgiveness.

God works in our lives in many ways, but it is often through hard times that he changes us and reveals himself. David experienced many hard times in his life that caused him to develop a deep dependency on God, and God needed to do a significant work in David’s life before he could trust him with greatness. It is only when you have no one else to turn to that you learn to rely on God for everything in life, including your next meal or even your next breath.

This summer we have selected as our theme “A Heart for God.” I pray you will join us at Harvey Cedars to deepen your relationship with God. It is our prayer that you develop an even greater heart for him. It starts with David’s words found in Psalm 51: “Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me.” David goes on to say, “Cast me not away from your presence.” David desperately relied on his close relationship with God to make it through each and every day.

How we live and act is also an important part of our walk with God. Psalm 19 says “Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight, Lord, my Redeemer.” It is my prayer that we all cultivate a heart for God in this next year. I hope to see you this summer at Harvey Cedars.

Sincerely,
Jon Oldham
